Celebrating the Start of Fall!

There are two equinoxes and solstices every year. One equinox occurs in September, while the other occurs in March. The season that you welcome, fall or spring, depends on the side of the equator that you live on. Here in the Northern Hemisphere we are welcoming Fall right now in September.

The equinox is the point in time that the sun crosses the celestial equator. It is an astronomical event that happens at the exact same moment across the world but I like to celebrate when the day and night are equal for my local time. The word equinox is derived from Latin, meaning “equal night.” On each equinox, the length of day and night are said to be more or less the same. I like to look up my local sunrise/sunset chart to figure out when the day of balance is for my area. It usually falls within a day or two of the universally recognized equinox day. You could also just celebrate on the universally recognized equinox day which this year is today September 22nd! On the equinox day and night, dark and light, inner and outer, masculine and feminine, are all in balance before the darkness and the death of winter start to take over. All things must die before they can be reborn. It’s the same for us spiritually and for self-improvement and just basic maintenance of our personal wellbeing. The Fall equinox is the perfect time for this internal analysis and preparation to begin.

For me this is a very special time of year. As the weather gets crisper and rain returns it fills me with a cozy glow. No shade to summer lovers but I am not a fan. I don’t do well in the heat and my fair skin and blue eyes mean the sun is not my friend. When the leaves start changing colors I feel the overwhelming urge to get out in nature. I want to go for walks and hikes and visit farms and the pumpkin patch. I just love it all so much! I start itching for fall by August every year. Fall is definitely my favorite season above all but the equinoxes in general hold special significance in my life. 

10 Ways to Celebrate Fall!

  1. Get Outside!
    My top tip is always to get outside! Nature is the best way to celebrate the changing of the seasons. Do whatever you like to do outside. Go hiking or go for a walk through your neighborhood. Hang out in your backyard or take an adventure the beach or a forest. It really doesn’t matter. Get outside in nature and dance in the rain if you have the opportunity.
  2. Make a Gratitude List!
    Make a list of everything you are thankful for as a way of reaping your inner harvest. If you don’t know where to begin, start with the food you have to eat and the roof over your head. It will flow naturally from there once you get started.
  3. Meditate!
    You can do a guided meditation if you aren’t sure what to do but you can also simply sit quietly and think about yourself.  Think about what habits, people or ideas are no longer adding value and happiness to your life. This is the time to let those go and make a change. Visualize what you want your life to look like or feel like and focus on what steps are needed to manifest that version of you. I like to do this meditation twice during the equinox, once during sunrise and once during sunset. It’s just a  magical transitional time.
  4. Restore Balance to Your Home!
    You can do this by doing a fall deep cleaning. Get rid of anything that you no longer need to make space for future abundance. You can also use this time to help you get organized and provide a framework for your day. A daily rhythm can increase productivity and assist you with time management. Starting the day out right is so important. So try to think at this time what you want to start incorporating into your daily routine to help keep your house balanced and organized. 
  5. Start Something New!
    This time of year is a wonderful time to work on yourself and let go of things that no longer serve you but it’s also a great time to try something you have always wanted to do. Start a new hobby or project and challenge yourself to grow!
  6. Make Something!
    If you have kids it’s so fun to get them involved and inspired through nature crafts. Get outside and find all the offerings falling to the ground this time of year. Gather whatever natural items they find interesting or pretty and make something with it! 
  7. Have a Harvest Feast!
    I’ve talked a lot about self reflection and inner harvest but this is also the time of the physical harvest. Early societies understood the importance of feasting with your neighbors to create a close-knit village. Without each other, they couldn’t survive, so they had a big harvest party together to celebrate, to create community, and to give thanks. Think of it like a thanksgiving with your chosen community. This might mean your actual neighbors or inviting over your friends. When planning your harvest feast try to consider in season, locally grown foods for your meal. It’s even better if you have grown some of it yourself. Our garden produced a wonderful harvest of tomatoes, eggplants, zucchinis, and squash this year. Traditional autumn harvest foods include; corn, squash, zucchini, apples, pumpkins, you get the idea. It’s also a wonderful touch if you can make some homemade breads, homemade soups or anything pure indulgent comfort food.
  8. Visit a Local Farm!
    We do this every year! Going in September also gives you the first pick of pumpkins and other natural fall décor you may want.  I also suggest spending some time this season educating your children with farm to table experiences that they will remember for the rest of their lives. So many adults these days have no concept of where their food comes from. The convenience of the grocery store causes us to forget to be grateful for the process of growing and making the food that literally keeps us alive. 
  9. Light a Fire!
    While our friends and neighbors are over we light a fire in our firepit out back (as long as it’s safe to do so, check your local restrictions). We sit around the fire, share drinks and stories and laughs and I love the memories we make around the fire.
  10. Decorate!
    This is the perfect time to decorate your space for fall! I’m going to do a video on YouTube of my personal fall decorations eventually. I usually do a combination of store bought and DIY decorations. I love the natural decorations like hay bales, pumpkins and corn stalks for the outside and pinecones, crystals and leaves for the inside. I love stones like Citrine, Obsidian Carnelian, Smoky Quartz and Moonstone for fall. They just give off the look and energy I want for fall.
