Staying Cool In The Heat

Here in the Pacific Northwest we are experiencing an unusually hot summer. Temperatures around 115 degrees Fahrenheit have never before been seen in Oregon and Washington until now. Those lucky enough to have central AC were desperately trying to keep their units going while most didn’t have cooling systems at all.

The summer heat can be uncomfortable but also very dangerous. It’s important to do anything you can to stay cool during these sweltering days. You have come to the right place!

Here are some tips for staying cool in this summer heat!

  1. Drink lots of water and stay hydrated!
This one should be a given!
  2. Get in the water!
Turn on the sprinkler, fill up the pool, visit the local water park or simply, fill a tub with a few inches of water and dangle your feet in it while you read a book.
  3. Cover the windows!
Most of the heat is going to come in through the windows rising the temperature and making your AC work harder (if you are lucky enough to have AC). Thermal curtains may be the solution if your home has lots of windows. If that’s not an option, try using pushpins to hang blankets over each window. In the earliest morning hours, open windows to let in all that cool air. Be sure to close them again, along with all blinds and curtains once the day begins to heat up.
  4. Take a shower before and after sleeping!
This will cool you down before bed, then wash off the sweat when you wake up.
  5. Shed the clothes!
Wear as little as possible. Forget about fashion and any insecurities and set your skin free. Especially if you are staying home during the heatwave, go full on naked if you feel comfortable that way. If you feel the need to wear clothes, wear light-weight and light-colored materials.
  6. Eat easily digestible foods!
Avoid heavy or starchy meals. Give your body less work to do so it can spend it’s energy on keeping you cool. Also avoid foods that require long cook times. Don’t contribute to the heat by using your oven or stove.
  7. Stay Inside!
If you need to do outside chores, do them in the morning when the sun rises or even earlier. Take frequent breaks, get plenty of water.
  8. Freeze your favorite snacks!
Yes, seriously! Chips, chocolate, cookies, ice cream and popsicles of course can all be frozen for a cooling treat.
  9. Homemade AC!
If you don’t have AC you can still help those fans along. Place awet cloth on a fan or a bowl of ice in front of a fan to cool the room a little more then the fan can do on it’s own.
  10. Take a vacation!
If you need to escape the heat, plan a trip to the mountains, forest or beach depending on the cooler temperature locations in your area.

Stay cool and stay safe!
